End of an era

Is anyone else saddened by the news that Woolworths is due to close down?

News reports have been filled with tales of their struggles in the current climate and it seems there have been no offers to come to their rescue.

I can remember many visit throughout my childhood to pick up sweets and toys and it will be strange to see high streets without them.

I loved going to Woolworth's as a child. Gosh, that chain of stores closed down a LONG time ago over here (across the pond). I remember being sad and nostalgic when that happened.

It's really sad, isn't it. I've shopped there an awful lot, and it's going to be a real hole in the high street.

Hi, Just popped by your site from Sherri's.... love your teacup photo heading. I love teacups. Have a cabinet full of them.

Alas, in our neighbourhood people have gotten out of having tea parties. They used to be quite popular in the '90's. But good news, I'm hosting a Christmas Tea tomorrow for my neighbour friends.

Best be off for baking and such.

(Yes, it is sad when old stores and traditions close... always ends an era.

It is such a sad sign of the times.
It has been said a lot on the news that their downfall is that they sell a lot of stuff but don't specialise in one thing.

I used to go to Woolworths in Maryland when I was growing up, but it closed down years ago there and I've never seen it in Texas, It's scary how many stores are going under! I caption stories about it every day! They recommend to not buy gift cards because stores might just be hanging in through the holidays and they'll close next year and the cards won't be any good! Our economy sure is on a downslide! suzie

I'm really sad.... I think I must be one of the very few people who shopped there weekly!!! I loved the things they sold, you could get some really good bargains... eg retro glass jugs for £1.49!! All these things mix well with CK etc. I didn't go in today because I felt really sorry for the staff... I've been there & I know how it feels. Fingers crossed someone will save them :(

I loved going to Woolworth's and we had another neat chain of stores (here In Calif.) called Ben Franklin's...both have been gone for years. I miss them. You could take your allowance, get a little treat and a bag of candy...made for a fun day...hugs, Linda

I'll be sad to see Woolies go; when I was a kid we always used to go in there for the pick and mix :) The one near me is quite big but it always seems to have a load of tat in it which is why I haven't actually bought anything from there in ages...

It is sad, I used go and buy singles (records)in there. It's going to leave a big gap on the high streets.

It was a real institution wasn't it? Almost 100 years & now the sad demise - let's hope somebody buys them out & keeps it going, especially as so many jobs are at stake.

It is very sad indeed, to echo a lot of the other comments, it is a shop I associate with my childhood and have lovely memories of going into our local town with my mum or dad to buy Christmas decorations and stocking fillers for the family. Clare x

Have you noticed that most comments are about how people USED to go? That's the problem - it had become dated. My biggest memory of Woolies is my Saturday job - stuck in the cafeteria kitchen with the world's biggest rotating potato peeler!

Its years since Ive been to Woolworths but like you it was part of my childhood too. Its always been kind of 'old fashioned' so maybe not upto todays more modern shops, its still a shame though. The news of how the customers have behaved in the selling off of stock is disgraceful X
