Today I've started reading How I Lived a Year on just a Pound a Day which Mrs Thrifty recently gave her views on here
I have to say as much as love these types of books and find them interesting I do often find them extreme
Don't get me wrong this isn't a guide but a story of one persons journey but I have to say the idea of hitch hiking to save a few pounds worries me slightly. I can imagine the look on my parents faces if I told them I was off to Brighton using my thumb stuck out on the M25!!
I also find it slightly strange that her reason behind doing this was to buy her brother and his fiance a wedding gift. Surely it would've been more inspiring to have put something together that was handmade or thrifted?
I know many of you gave your views on Mrs Thrifty's post but if there are any more of you out there who have read the book and have an opinion do let me know!!
I am actually looking forward to the next Chapter tomorrow which is December, lets see how Christmas went for her

I wonder if the £1 a day was as well as her advance on the book? Oooh I can be a bit wicked sometimes! SueX
Hope this book lives up to your expectations!
I can tell you for sure Victoria that hitching is dangerous.LOL...Maybe the lady in the book don't know any better.

I'm really not sure living on a £1 a day can be done... any tips do send my way though!
I do agree that her reason for doing it was a bit strange! I thought ooooh just make something woman (my brother in law and his girlfriend made us a mirror and painted a frame and we adore it) and use that saved money for something else.
I agree it is by no means a guide (Christ I wouldn't hitch hike if you PAID me), but I did find her food questions and worries something to think about. Why could she get junk food so cheap but 'decent' good food that wouldn't require bigger wiast bands for cheap prices? I found that very interesting and something society has to think about.
Some of her tips are bizarre, some work and some are things we've heard before. I like the notion that we don't have to live mainstream, but I am sure there are better books/publications out there that reinforce it in a much better way.
Enjoy your read (and shouting at her, which I did at several points) and if you bought it don't forget to take it back and exchange it for something else as an unwanted gift. ;)
And I can't type on my phone! Haha.
No way would I hitch hike to save money! That is a stupid idea!

I hope you dont mind, but I've added your blog onto my blogroll on my site.

Let us know the best tips -- I swear I can't get out of the grocery for under $100 these days and that's for a family of three!
I can't imagine how she did it and I'm courious about Christmas too. I read some of the reader comments on Amazon....an interesting read...some good tips...not for everyone and so on.I'd like to take a look at it but not sure if it's for me. hugs, Linda
p.s. please no hitch hiking:)...that's the mom in me speaking...L
well, as you know I'm all for saving a buck or two, AND can tell you how to feed an army on (probably) a pound a day...
BUT - hitch-hiking is a def no-no!
I think they would lend you the Beemer before they let you hitch-hike!
PS also interested about xmas... I always manage to spend a FORTUNE on just food... I refuse to beleive they ate a turkey dinner for a quid!

I am painfully frugal myself, but I have to chuckle (and agree) with your opinion of the book (which I haven't read, but would enjoy hearing more about it through you!)
Mmmmm think I shall leave that one on the shelf
Ohooo yes I sgree with you Victoria, I have to say haven't been totally inspired by her crafting and the bathrooms didn't do it for me at all, loved the customised blind though :)
Of course I shall watch every episode ;)
Have a lovely weekend

Your blog is so pretty...really glad I found it...and also like Mrs Thrifty's views on the book; one thing being thrifty and another being just a bit silly!
Also see your probably a Judy Garland fan...me too and The Wizard of Oz must be one of the greatest films of all time (did you know Judy origionally had a blonde wig for Dorothy!!!)
Thanks for the lovely polka dot fix too...

I'm trying to cut back, but honestly £1 a day would be very dull indeed. I haven't bought any new clothes for months, but now I really feel the need...
